To create personalised pictures, fabric prints or greetings cards, you can not only let your imagination run wild with painting. Potato stamps can also create a wonderful picture.

It’s best to get an adult to help you cut the stamps to avoid cutting accidents.

What you need for this:

– Several large potatoes
– 1 sharp knife
– Small or medium sized tin biscuit cutters (depending on the size of the potato)
– White paper, cardboard, fabric… anything that can be printed on
– brushes
– watercolour paint, acrylic paint… anything that can be brushed onto the potato stamps
– water container to wash off the brush paint

And this is how it works:

Wash the potatoes once under water to remove any soil residue. Then dry them with a towel.

Then cut the potatoes in half on the thickest side.

Now carefully press the biscuit mould into one of the halves with the sharp edge until it is about 2-3 mm deep in the potato. Please be careful, because if you press too hard, the mould could cut through the potato half or you could hurt yourself.

Once the mould is in the potato, take your knife again and cut off the outer edge up to the biscuit shape. Make sure that you leave enough potato at the bottom so that you can easily pick it up later to stamp.

Alternatively, you can come up with your own motive. Just make sure that you think in reverse and cut out the highs and lows of the motive correctly.

Once everything is cut to your satisfaction, take your brush and paint and paint the potato stamp with it.
As the stamps are made from potatoes, the potato starch naturally leaks out of the stamps. So if you want stronger colours, mix/apply the paint a little thicker.

Finally, you can spread the stamps on the leaves or fabrics as you like.

(I recommend using acrylic paint for fabrics as it is more durable).

Your stamp creation is ready and you have a wonderfully unique work of art in front of you.
