If you have a garden, you need to start preparing it for the summer again from March.

Here I have compiled a list and information with the things that should be done:

Pruning:

  • Shoots that cross each other
  • Thin shoots, as these cannot hold flowers
  • Side shoots that are superfluous
  • Shoots that are injured or frozen must be cut back to healthy wood
  • Cut off diseased, infected or dead shoots
  • Cut rods from blackberry bushes that are old or dried out
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Cherry laurel hedge (pruning is best done by hand)
  • Summer and winter heather
  • Cut back aromatic plants (e.g. savoury, lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme)
  • Roses – when the forsythia open their flowers in March

Direct sowing outdoors:

  • Broad beans
  • Sweet peas
  • carrots
  • radishes
  • Radish
  • Onions
  • Cauliflower
  • Kohlrabi
  • Broccoli
  • Savoy cabbage
  • Poppy seeds
  • Lupine

Planting in beds or containers:

  • Horned violets
  • Pansies
  • Bamboo (division or planting is particularly recommended in March)
  • Berry bushes
  • Prepare potato bed soil

Pre-breeding indoors (sowing) until the weather is warmer:

  • Peppers
  • aubergines
  • chilli
  • tomatoes
  • Potatoes – pre-germinate for 4 weeks before planting outdoors

Fertilise:

  • Lawn
  • Fruit trees

If you have potted plants that have spent the winter in your garage or house, you should cut off the thin, long shoots that have developed due to the lack of light.
You should also remove shoots that are too close together and interfere with growth on the opposite side – it is best to always cut off the weaker shoot above the soil.
